2015 Christmas Events in The Lake District

If the hustle and bustle of the festive season feels a little ominous, the Lake District is the ideal place to beat the rush and get back to a simpler, less stressful Christmas period. For the ultimate hassle free Christmas break or New Year’s party, we are offering some very special Christmas and New Year’s Breaks this year. But equally, you could book a well-earned breather earlier or later. Indeed, there are plenty of great ways to escape the supermarket queues and reintroduce some authentic festive cheer at various times . From musical highlights to making your own special gifts, here are some Christmas markets and festive highlights in the Lake District to look forward to:

Christmas Duets at Allan Bank (Sat 5th & 12th Dec, 13:00-15:00)
What could be more delightful than a selection of live Christmas carols in a classic setting? Combining the vocal talents of Lynn Temple and Peter Bayliss in one of Wordsworth’s Lake District haunts, this should be a stirring performance in an atmospheric setting, which is an uplifting tale in itself having been restored after fire damage in 2011. National Trust members receive free entry, while there is a small charge for other guests. See the National Trust/Allan Bank page on Facebook for further updates HERE

A Lakeland Christmas (Weds 9th Dec, 14:00, Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry)
Experience a taste of Christmas, Victorian style. Discover everything from real period Christmas cards, to the decadence with which festivities were celebrated in the era of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Lots of authentic items to see, as well as the usual exhibits of this fascinating collection. More events and information at: www.lakelandmuseum.org.uk

Keswick Victorian Christmas Fayre (Sunday 6th Dec, 11:00 onwards, town centre)
With live music and entertainment, gift stalls, festive food, carols and even the odd reindeer, this promises to be a lively festive day of fun. Even more so if, like many locals, you take the plunge and dress in Victorian style. Those who love a traditional Christmas will also enjoy the festive hymns that follow at St.John’s Church at 16:30. Make your own Christmas gifts and cards: One day craft courses and workshops in the Lake District (Various dates)
Are you looking for a Christmas gift that comes straight from the heart, or perhaps your very own hands? Making your own crafty present for someone not only adds a lovely personal touch, but allows you to learn new skills in the process.

A bowl carved of local greenwood, for example, couldn’t get much more Lake District. A special Bowl CarvingWorkshop (Weds 16th Dec, 0900-1700) lets you make your very own in good company at the National Trust Footprint Building (Windermere, LA23 1NH).

Alternately, you could develop your creative skills and make your own special Christmas Cards in one of many Card Making and Craft Workshops at The Paper Warehouse in Kendal (Various dates up to Dec 16th). Typically these friendly short courses last three hours and cover various skills and themes.
